Torre Abbey, Torquay, South Devon

Torre Abbey, Torquay, South Devon

Wonderful museum and art gallery

Once the wealthiest abbey of its kind in England, today Torre Abbey is one of the most complete and important examples of an abbey in the country. Open daily all year round, Torre Abbey is in the heart of Torquay within The English Riviera.

Follow in the footsteps of the Canons who lived here 800 years ago under a strict regime of silence and prayer. At that time, Torquay was just a tiny fishing hamlet.

Torre Abbey is home to one of Devon county’s most impressive art collections.

Other Devon abbeys we'd recommend visiting include Buckfast Abbey and Buckland Abbey. If historical buildings are of interest, we'd also suggest you try Berry Pomeroy Castle and Dartmouth Castle, Powderham Castle and Estate and Totnes Castle. In Dartmoor National Park, the National Trust's Castle Drogo and Gardens is exceptionally popular.

In the Torquay area, visit Torquay Marina and Living Coasts, Kents Cavern and Paignton Zoo. Given that The English Riviera is famous for its coastline, there area plenty of beaches to enjoy as well. Goodrington Sands and Meadfoot Beach are lovely.
