Family outdoor activities
Great for family days out, activities include treesurfing, mountain biking, canoeing, archery and walking. The Tamar Trails Centre is also within a section of a rare UNESCO World Heritage Site so you get to enjoy visitor attractions such as Morwellham Quay and Kit Hill. Add the National Trust's Cotehele House and the gorgeous Bere Peninsula and you've plenty of things to do. It's a spectacular location and one of our favourite places in the UK.
Location of, and directions to, Tamar Trails
We've positioned the Tamar Trails Centre on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. To visit, follow the A390 to Gunnislake on the Devon/Cornwall border at the River Tamar. Tamar Trails is well signposted on the Devon side of the border and river.
On that satellite imagery, you'll see it's situated in a heavily wooded area above the River Tamar. Coupled with the area's mining heritage, these natural features provide the perfect place in which to enjoy the below activities. We've returned many times over the years to enjoy them.
Tamar Trails activities
Tree Surfers. Move through the canopy high above the forest floor. There are numerous high ropes courses to enjoy. Great fun
Bike & Hike. Cycling, walking and horse riding trails extend across the landscape around the Tamar Trails Centre. Hire a bike from Tamar Trails Centre. We'd recommend cycling south to Morwellham Quay. It's great walking country as well. Try the Sheepridge Trail by Morwellham and explore the remarkable ruins at New Quay on a bank of the River Tamar.
Canoe Tamar. Book yourself a trip on the River Tamar. Trips leave from Cotehele Quay and follow the river to Calstock and beyond. A highlight is passing under the iconic Calstock Viaduct.
Other activities. Archery, the 'Big Zip' zip wire, 'Leap of Faith' and bushcraft. Try archery in the woods by the Tamar Trails Centre. There's also a zip wire, the 'Leap of Faith' tree jump and bushcraft sessions.
Visitor attractions near Tamar Trails
Morwellham Quay. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Morwellham Quay is a major Westcountry tourist attraction. Take a train trip into a disused copper mine.
Kit Hill. This Country Park offers staggeringly beautiful views of Bodmin Moor, the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Plymouth and the western flank of Dartmoor.
Cotehele House. One of the finest National Trust properties in the Westcountry, Cotehele is particularly impressive in Spring when the apple blossom appears.
The Bere Peninsula. The Rivers Tavy and Tamar curl around the peninsula to offer gorgeous views. Wonderful walking country. Top wildlife. Lopwell Dam is a highlight. Walk across the causeway at low tide.
