The 'Dart' of 'Dartmoor'
The 'Dart' of 'Dartmoor'. The River Dart rises as two tributaries on the high moors of the northern plateau of Dartmoor National Park.
The East River Dart begins in the area around Hangingstone Hill. The West River Dart begins close to Cut Hill and Fur Tor.
These tributaries join at Dartmeet to form the River Dart. The River Dart then flows through the Dart Gorge towards the very popular New Bridge and New Bridge Car Park and Deeper Marsh/Spitchwick area.
It curves its way down the eastern flank of Dartmoor National Park to Buckfast Abbey.
Having left the National Park and entered the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the River Dart widens out as it runs through Totnes towards the sea at Dartmouth and Kingswear.
Other important South West England rivers that rise on the high moors of Dartmoor include the River Plym and River Erme, River Teign and River Tavy.
