Wembury South West Coast Path Walk, Wembury, South Devon

The South West Coast Path at Wembury

Wembury Beach is beautiful National Trust land lining Wembury Bay to the east of Plymouth Sound. The setting is stunning and there's great coastal walking east to the River Yealm and Estuary by Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo or west to Plymouth Sound and then Plymouth. The terrain in both directions is relatively gentle.

Walking the South West Coast Path east of Wembury

Start at Wembury Beach. The Old Mill cafe and shop overlooks the beach. Wembury Marine Centre is across the way below the car park and church. There are public loos on site.

Follow the South West Coast Path along the back of Wembury Beach to Langdon Beach and then Wembury Point Beach. The path is pretty much flat but we'd recommend leaving it and following the beaches along the coast between Wembury Beach and Wembury Point. There are great views of Wembury Bay and Great Mew Stone out at sea.

The path climbs gently to Wembury Point and then arcs to Heybrook Bay and the Eddystone Inn. You then head north to Bovisand Beach. Note that at this point there are top views of Plymouth Sound and Plymouth Breakwater. The popular East Cornwall holiday destinations Kingsand and Cawsand are across the bay.

The South West Coats Path rises to the cliffs by Bovisand Fort, Brownhill Battery and Staddon Fort. You then drop down to Jennycliff Beach, Rum Bay Beach and Batten Bay Beach by Mount Batten.

Either take the short ferry trip to Plymouth Barbican and get a bus back to Wembury or loop back across South Devon countryside on the Erme-Plym Trail.

Walking the South West Coast Path west of Wembury

Alternatively, head east from Wembury Beach above the car park. The path gently climbs and then runs along a beautiful stretch of coastline high above Wembury Bay. The views are immense.

Continue to Warren Point and take the Warren Point, Wide Slip and Yealm Steps Ferry/Water Taxi across the water.

Follow the South West Coast Path to Gara Point and wander along The Warren. You are high above the sea. Again, the views are huge from the Gara Point area.

A path diverts from the South West Coast Path to a car park and proceeds down to Noss Mayo. Walk the road west along Newton Creek and catch the ferry back to Warren Point.

Walk back to Wembury.
