Torcross, South Devon

Torcross, South Devon

One of Devon's best coastal villages

Torcross overlooks a huge shingle beach and the magnificent Start Bay. Super spot for seafood and coastal walking.

Why holiday or weekend break at Torcross?

To help you choose Torcross, we've listed some of the local attractions below.

Start Bay

Arcs from the Dartmouth area down to Start Point. Wonderful place. Highlights include Blackpool Sands, Slapton Sands, Torcross, Beesands and Start Point.

Slapton Sands

Huge shingle beach stretching for miles along the coastline. A road runs behind the beach and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. There are plenty of parking spots along the way including one at Torcross.

Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve

Beautiful National Nature Reserve known for its seasonal starlings roosts (if this is of interest, see also Okehampton Starling Roosts on our sister site Holiday in Dartmoor).

Start Bay Inn

Start Bay Inn is located on the sea front overlooking Slapton Sands and Start Bay. Alternatively, try the cafe Sea Breeze. There's another pub called The Tradesman's Arms inland at Stokenham and The Cricket Inn is just down the coast at Beesands. Britannia @ The Beach is also in Beesands.

For food, drink and other items there's also Start Bay Stores in Torcross.

Torcross Sherman Tank and the Normandy Landings Monument

Commemorates the tragic events surrounding a dress rehearsal for D-Day called Exercise Tiger. During the exercise, German E-Boats attacked the convoy. Over 600 sailors and soldiers lost their lives.

South West Coast Path

There's a fine stretch of the South West Coast Path between Dartmouth and Start Point. From Torcross, we'd recommend wandering to Beesands, Hallsands and Start Point before returning.

In addition to Slapton Sands, this area of South Devon is known for its beaches. Blackpool Sands is extremely popular as are Bantham Beach and Bigbury-on-Sea Beach.

Woodlands Park

If you're on holiday with kids then spand a day or two at Woodlands Park. Great fun.

The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary

Many of the UK's finest estuaries are located in the Westcountry. The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary is up there with the best. From Torcross, head to Kingsbridge and take the ferry down the estuary to Salcombe.

Along with Salcombe, this is essential UK visiting.
