South Devon's quirkiest landmark and its tragic story

Drive the A379 between Slapton Sands (Beach) and Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve and you'll see a Sherman tank in the corner of the car park by Torcross. The quirky landmark is associated with a tragic story. 

The Sherman is a US tank recovered from the sea after 'Exercise Tiger'. 'Exercise Tiger' refers to two military exercises in WWII that took place in this part of South Devon. In 1944, American troops practiced for the Utah Beach landings of the D-Day invasion. Tragically, in the region of 700 men were killed by German attacks during the exercise.
