Dominating the eastern side of Burrator Reservoir
Sheeps Tor dominates the eastern side of Burrator Reservoir. It rises steeply from the plantations that fringe the water and is topped by huge rocky outcrops and crags that are popular with climbers. Given its height and relative isolation, the 360 degree views are sensational. If you're exploring the Burrator Reservoir area, make sure you yomp up to the top of Sheeps Tor. You can walk in from all directions. We provide route ideas below.

Directions and parking for Sheeps Tor
To visit for the first time, we'd recommend starting from the car parking area at Burrator Arboretum and Nature Reserve. Very obvious paths that are marked on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map take you through the trees to open moorland. It's then a steep yomp up to the top.
There are plenty of other ways to walk in.
From the west. Start from the car parking areas by Burrator Reservoir Dam. Walk across the dam and very shortly you'll see a stile to your left. This takes you through the woods to Sheepstor Dam. Cross the dam and walk through the woods again until you come to an informal car parking area by the road. Turn right and walk along the road. You come to a bend where you'll see a path that climbs through woods to open moorland. It's a stiff hike to the top.
From the south. There's limited parking on the southern fringe of Sheeps Tor by Sheepstor village. Paths rise through bracken to crags popular with climbers.
From the east. You can walk across the moor from the Yellowmead Circles/Multiple Stone Ring area. It can get boggy until you hit the eastern flank of Sheeps Tor.
From the north. There's a very large car parking area north of Burrator Arboretum and Nature Reserve at Norsworthy Bridge. Walk in from there.
Last, if you want a longer walk, we'd suggest following the Burrator and Sheepstor Circular Walk. This walk takes you around the reservoir and to the top of Sheeps Tor. Wonderful experience.
