Exe Estuary and Exmouth Ferries and Boat Trips, Exeter, South Devon

Ferries in the Exe Estuary and from Exmouth

Ferries run from numerous places in the Exe Estuary. These include Starcross, The Turf pub, Topsham and Exmouth.

Starcross/Exmouth Ferry

A ferry runs between Starcross and Exmouth.

In Starcross, head for the railway station. Cross the railway line using the bridge and then wander down to the jetty, ticket office and ferry. It's well signposted and you can buy tickets before you go.

In Exmouth, the ferry leaves from the entrance to Exmouth Marina at the mouth of the Exe Estuary.

You can take bikes on this ferry if you're cycling the Exe Estuary Trail.

Exmouth/Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve

There's a superb foot passenger ferry that runs between Exmouth Marina and the northern tip of Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. Run by Explorer Water Taxis, this is a seasonal service.

Note that Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve is of national importance so you can't bring bikes and dogs on the ferry. When we went, they said that the last ferry trip was at 6PM.

Topsham/Turf Ferry

Other ferries cross the water further up the estuary at Topsham. A ferry runs from Topsham across to The Turf pub.

In Topsham, head for the slipway on Ferry Road by the church.

At The Turf pub area, wander down to the jetty that juts out into the River Exe and Estuary just south of the pub.

You can take bikes on this ferry if you're cycling the Exe Estuary Trail.

Topsham/Topsham Lock Ferry

Another local ferry runs from Topsham across to Topsham Lock.

In Topsham, head for the slipway on Ferry Road by The Passage House Inn.

The ferry is well signposted at Topsham Lock and you'll see it running back and forth throughout the day.

You can take bikes on this ferry if you're cycling the Exe Estuary Trail.
