Magnificent castle location

Exceptional site at the mouth of the River Dart and Estuary offering great views out to sea and back to Dartmouth.

Access to the castle is by foot (it's on the South West Coast Path), car or ferry. The Dartmouth Castle Ferry runs frequently from central Dartmouth.

Managed by English Heritage, Dartmouth Castle dates from the fourteenth century and 'the present Guntower building is the earliest surviving English coastal fortress specifically built to carry guns' (Wikipedia). St Petrox Church is within the castle complex.

There's a cafe and English Heritage shop.

Stairs lead down to 'Castle Cove'.

Across the water is Kingswear Castle which is owned by The Landmark Trust and is available to rent.

Dartmouth St Petrox Chruch

One of the most dramatically located churches in the UK. Set within the walls of Dartmouth Castle, there are awesome views up and across River Dart and Estuary.

'Established as a monk's cell in 894' (Information board on site). Note taht there's a fascinating history of the church on 'The Parish of Dartmouth' website.

 

Castle Cove

Castle Cove is a small beach by Dartmouth Castle. Steps lead down from the castle into the cove.
