South Milton Sands/Thurlestone Sand (Beach), Bigbury-on-Sea, South Devon

Long, sand beach ideal for families

South Milton Sands is the southern section of the beach. Thurlestone Sand is the northern section of the beach. This long stretch of sand is popular with families. There's also a fashionable beach cafe and bar called the beachhouse at the north end of South Milton Sands.

There's plenty of parking behind both sections of the beach but charges apply. When we first visited, we parked behind South Milton Sands which is National Trust property. Again, zoom in on the satellite imagery to see these car parking areas. Note that there's a very large parking area behind Thurlestone Leas Foot Sand (Beach) as well. This is a short walk away. You'll also find public toilets and a cafe behind the South Milton Sands section of the beach.

To the west is Thurlestone Leas Foot Sand (Beach). Beyond that, via the South West Coast Path, are Bantham Beach, Bigbury-on-Sea Beach and the famous Burgh Island. We've walked most of the 630 mile coastal path and the stretch west of South Milton Sands/Thurlestone Sand (Beach) is up there with the best for views.

To the east are Hope Cove Mouthwell Beach and Hope Cove Harbour Beach. Beyond those is another super stretch of the South West Coast Path over Bolberry Down to Soar Mill Cove (Beach).

East of Thurlestone Sands/South Milton Sands (Beach) is the Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary. If you've never been to Salcombe then we'd urge you to visit. On sunny days, the location is sublime.
