Best South Devon Watersports, Bigbury-on-Sea, South Devon

In an area of England famous for its coastline, it's no surprise that you could spend your entire holiday trying out various watersports. We list by location and watersport.



We lead with Bantham Beach because it's an iconic South Devon surfing spot. It's also exceptionally beautiful with Burgh Island beyond. There's plenty of parking behind the beach. As you might expect, charges apply. Zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting of the accompanying Google map to see the beach's location. On that satellite imagery, you'll also see the car parking area next to the dune system.

Discovery Surf School. Surf lessons, hire and surf shop located by the main car park overlooking the beach at Bigbury-on-Sea. Surfing, bodyboarding, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. You can also hire wetsuits.

Venus Riders Watersports. The Venus Company manages lots of beach cafes on the Devon and Cornwall coastline (also at Blackpool Sands, East Portlemouth, Tolcarne and Watergate Bay). As part of this, they run Venus Riders Watersports. At Bigbury-on-Sea, Venus Riders works in conjunction with Discovery Surf School.



Sea Kayak Devon. Major South Devon sea kayaking company based in Dartmouth. Sea Kayak Devon runs most of their trips from Dartmouth but also operate from other places such as Torquay, Brixham, Salcombe and Cawsand.

Canoe Adventures (Tuckenhay/Stoke Gabriel). Enjoy canoe trips from Tuckenhay or Stoke Gabriel on the River Dart between Dartmouth and Totnes.

Dartmouth Boat Hire. Hire boats (Cabin Cruisers, Dell Quay Dory 15, The Large Open Boat, Fisherman Boat, Open Launch Inboard and Bonwitco Launch) from Dartmouth and sail on the River Dart. You can visit the mouth of the Dart Estuary by Dartmouth Castle, Dittisham, Tuckenhay, Sharpham Vineyard and Totnes.

Venus Riders Watersports (Blackpool Sands). Watersports including kayaking, bodyboarding and stand up paddle boarding from this sublime South Devon beach location.



Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre. Located on Exeter Quay, offers a huge range of activities including watersports such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and power-boating. Adults, kids and family activities.

AS Watersports. Kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding are among the activities on offer. Again, located on Exeter Quay.

Saddles and Paddles. Another outdoor activity supplier based on Exeter Quay. Hire kayaks and canoes. Note that this is a great place from which to hire bikes to ride the Exe Estuary Trail.

Newton Abbot

Devon Windsurf & Canoe Centre. Located in Newton Abbot. Windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding on Decoy Lake.



Reach Outdoors (Goodrington Sands). Super location in the heart of The English Riviera. Provide a wide range of outdoor activities including watersports such as kayaking, coasteering and stand up paddle boarding.



Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre. Located on the coast of Plymouth Sound. Offers the full English breakfast of watersports. Activities include kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing, coasteering, gorge walking, dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing and powerboating.

TK Watersports. Located in Plymouth. We've never used them as a supplier but the sales pitch on their site is superb. 'By hiring a kayak from TK Watersports, you can explore Plymouth Sound from Bovisand to Cawsand  & Kingsand, have a pic-nic on Drakes Island, paddle up the River Tamar and see the warships at the historic dockyard, paddle along the River Lynher to Millbrook, or the River Plym! Or maybe join us on a kayaking tour of the Canal and River Exe in Exeter stopping off at the famous Double Locks pub.'

Reactive Water Sports Academy. Located in Plymouth. Stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and wake boarding.



Sea N Shore. Located in the heart of Salcombe. Watersports include rib rides, banana rides, wakeboarding, water skiing and coasteering.

Sea Kayak Salcombe (South Sands). Located at South Sands on The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary. Kayaking and stand up paddle boards. Take a kayak tour.

Salcombe Boat Hire. Boat hire located in Salcombe. 'You can explore the sheltered scenic Salcombe waters in your own self-drive hire boat.'

Whitestrand Boat Hire. Offers a wide range of self-drive hire boats. Located in Salcombe.



SeaSports South West is located at the mouth of the Teign Estuary. Sailing, powerboat, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddle boarding courses.
